Reader reviews

  • It's a nice collection of short stories to keep you entertained for a few hours.

It's a nice collection of short stories to keep you entertained for a few hours. The author is fairly good at describing characters and settings in a way that doesn't drag on, but gets straight to the point. The dialogue is believable for the characters and settings. Overall, it's an interesting collection of stories that would make for a fun afternoon of reading.

One minor thing that I would mention is to perhaps format the text just a bit differently; the indents before each paragraph are a bit too long, and the paragraph alignment would look better 'justified' than aligned to the left. This is merely a cosmetic thing that doesn't reflect the writing itself.

  • A rarity in supernatural fiction

Few fictional anthologies have the ability to capture the imagination as Dawn Joy Marks brilliant "Tales from the Otherworld". From the opening "Prologue" to the appropriately titled "Decent into Madness", the author weaves a world dripping in both atmosphere and spellbinding detail. Despite the supernatural setting of each story, Ms. Marks tales are rooted in a realistically honest view of the grim urgency of American life and thus give the reader an ability to relate to an otherwise alien world. However, you will find yourself simultaneously inundated by lush visual depictions of an alternate reality, an escape, if you will, from our monotonously ordinary existence. Thus, the book appeals to a much wider audience and cements Ms. Marks as an admirably gifted author in the world of fictional literature. It is due to this fact that I am sure I am not alone in my anticipation of her next creation. Until then, this collection of tales is highly recommended.
